When I first saw this picture, I had no intention in ever sharing it with another person, not because it isn’t a lovely image captured by the very talented Makenna Pope, but because it so clearly depicted the nonstructural (functional) scoliosis in my spine. As a yoga teacher and certified personal trainer, I felt as though I should be immune to such skeletal and muscular imbalances within my own body, because I felt I had the tools to prevent them from ever happening in the first place. But it’s my reality.

I started suffering from low back pain in 2012 and from that point on I saw countless medical providers and received a plethora of treatments to help with my chronic pain. Often, I would receive a treatment hoping it was the “fix” only to have the pain return after a few hours. It wasn’t until the end of last year, a full 3 years of constant, variable treatments, that a provider took scans of the bones in my legs, discovering that my right leg bones are shorter than my left. This skeletal discrepancy was the root of my low back pain and has caused the muscles of my middle and upper back to be so tense on the right side it has actually pulled my vertebrae into the curve you see within the image.

During the 3 years of suffering from chronic, sometimes downright debilitating pain, it was yoga that was my saving grace, not only for the physical relief it provided my aching body but for how it allowed me to let go of my frustrations, as I shuffled from one appointment to the next. Yoga helped me be receptive and compassionate to my situation. I share this with you today, because I know what it is like to suffer physically, mentally, and emotionally. But yoga has the ability to help! One-on-one sessions act as a holistic practice to increase your awareness, to work towards a specific goal, and to restore your personal health and well-being. If you are interested in exploring the therapeutic benefits of yoga, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. I look forward to hearing from you.
