Happy Monday! I hope your day has been absolutely lovely and your week is off to a great start. Today’s Monday Mantra is, Life isn’t about what you know, it’s about what you don’t know.
Full disclosure, not knowing or simply lacking the knowledge to do something is an experience that has always created a great deal of discomfort and frustration for me. When this experience has arisen in my life, I would become fixated on figuring it out- pouring hours of time and focused energy into learning what I didn’t already know. It wasn’t until I started working in a classroom that I saw the power of not knowing and began to trust the mystery that life provides.
Within my classroom, I know a lot about the content I teach as I’ve dedicated good portions of my life to learning about it, but my students are these amazing, complex beings that see things in a way that I never have before. With their unique perspectives, they cultivate the most creative questions that I don’t always have the answers. It’s been through this process that they’ve taught me it’s okay to say, “I don’t know” – that life isn’t about having all the answers, it’s in all that is unknown.
I now start my class on Day 1 with my students telling them that while I may know a lot about the content I am going to teach them, I don’t know everything. Throughout the course, I encourage them to ask their questions and to give into their curiosity. I may respond by telling them I don’t know when they ask something, but I follow it up with let’s learn about that together, which allows us both to grow and gain further awareness of the world around us and that’s where life happens.
